ESTHER SELKE FREIDAY AGE: 86 MANASQUAN Esther Selke Freiday, age 86, of Manasquan, NJ and more recently of Reston, VA passed away on Friday, July 29, 2011 after a period of illness. Born Esther Francisca Dorothea Selke on June 19, 1925 to Esther Clara Abbetmeyer Selke and Arthur Carl Selke in Saint Paul, MN. Raised in Dickinson, ND, Esther attributed her healthy gait and lifelong love for walking and biking to her long uphill treks to school in the frigid North Dakota weather. Esther received her bachelor's degree from the University of Washington where she met her husband, Dean Freiday, whom she married in her home town Lutheran Church in Dickinson, ND on June 27, 1946. The couple moved to New Jersey where they lived in Elberon and Manasquan for well over fifty years until Dean's death in 2008. Esther received her Masters of Education degree from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, in 1958 and later her teaching certificate from the state of New Jersey. Esther had a gift for teaching and thrived in her role as a sixth grade teacher where she was loved by her students. She was later employed by the Asbury Park Press. Esther was an avid reader and was known by friends and fam ily for her joy of a great and lively debate on any subject. She was a long time member of the Manasquan Friends Meeting and the Order of Eastern Star. She moved to Reston, VA shortly after her husband's death and became an active resident of Tall Oaks at Reston where she enjoyed walking, arts and crafts, Bible study and a busy calendar of outings until her health recently declined. Esther was a devoted wife, mother, teacher and Quaker. She is preceded in death by her sister, Carta, who died in a tragic New Jersey train wreck in 1958. She is survived by her daughter, Gail Freiday Crockett of Reston, VA; a son, William Arthur Freiday of BayvUle, New Jersey and two grandsons, Scott Colin Crockett of Miami, FL and Drew Freiday Crockett of Chiswick, England.
