Bower and co-operative company began in Osgoode in 1856 along the Old Prescott-Bytown Road that would be known as West Osgoode. The members of the company were John Conrad Bower, Joseph Bower, James Porter and Andrew Blackburn, general merchants and proprietors of steam saw mills. The mill was established at a cost of $300 with a 16 horsepower engine and capable of turning 800,000 feet of lumber per year. In connection with the sawmill there was an extensive turning factory where table legs and bedsteads were turned out in large quantities.

News of the death of Andrew Blackburn will come as a shock to his friends here. The sad event occurred at his home in Toronto where he has resided for twelve years. Mr. Blackburn was born in Kemptville on February 28, 1836, and resided here for many years, being one of the most prominent men of the town. He leaves a widow and five children: Joseph in British Columbia; Arthur of New York; Andrew who resides in Chicago; and Misses Nellie and Ivy in Toronto. One brother survives him, Thomas Blackburn of town. The funeral of the late Andrew Blackburn was held on Tuesday, interment being made in Mount Pleasant cemetery. Will Blackburn of town went up to attend. 26
