Her obituary was published in 1956 in Ottawa, Carleton, Ontario, Canada. Following a lingering illness, Mrs. Dvid Melvin, Sr. passed away quietly at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ira Bower, 109 Ossington Avenue, Ottawa, last Saturday. She had been a resident of Winchester and the Melvin Settlement for more than 65 years before going to Ottawa 13 years ago.

A daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs, Theodore Sharpe, Mrs. Melvin was born 88 years ago at Lisbon, N.Y. At the age of nine years she came to Canada with her family to reside at Winchester where her father operated the Commercial Hotel. Seventy years ago she married David Melvin of the Melvin Settlement, and for several years following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Melvin were respected farm people in the district. Mr. Melvin died 19 years ago. Following her husband's death Mrs. Melvin continued to live with her son, Hart, in Winchester. In 1943 she went to Ottawa where for several years she resided with her daughter, Mrs. H. MacLean, and finally with another daughter, Mrs. Ira Bowr, where she was residing at the time of her death. She was a member of the Methodist Church and later the United Church which she attended regurlay when enjoying good health.

The last remaining member of her family, she is survived by two sons, Carl of Vancouver, and Hart of Winchester; five daughters, Mrs. Ira Bower (Bessie), Ottawa; Mrs. S. M. Shaver (Belle), Ottawa; Mrs. A. P. Johnston (Emily), Kemptville; Mrs. Laura Smith, Ottawa, and Mrs. H. MacLean (Ruth), Ottawa. Several grandchildren and great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services for the late Mrs. Melvin were conducted by Rev. Dr. Donald at the Vice and Craig Funeral Home, Winchester, on Tuesday afternoon. Interment was made at Maple Ridge Cemetery. The pall-bearers were four grandsons: Messrs. David Melvin Jr., Melvin Johnston, Harry Bower, John Smith, and Messrs. Gordon Elliott and Hugh Slater.

Many beautiful floral tributes testified to the esteem in which the late Mrs. Melvin was held. 15



She was buried at the Maple Ridge in Winchester, Dundas, Ontario, Canada on 18 Sep 1956.
