bullet  General Notes:

McCargar connection, according to Wayne McCargar:

First of all it is only speculation on my behalf that Joseph McCargar's wife, Catherine's name was Melvin. Joseph McCargar has been found in 2 different 1800 US census. The first was in Philadelphia where he had 3 children and a wife. The children's ages were, boy 16 to 25, girl 10 to 16 and boy 10 to 16, the wife was 26 to 45. The second was Grenville, New York, where he only had a wife, 26 to 45 and one boy 10 to 16 with him.
The next is the 1804 South Gower census where it shows Joseph Melvin living with Joseph and Catherine McCargar. So the speculation is that Joseph McCargar married Catherine who had 3 kids. The 2 teenagers that were in the Philadelphia census with Joseph McCargar stayed in Pennsylvania when Joseph McCargar and Catherine left. As there was a time difference between the two US censuses it's plausible that he could have been enumerated in both places. Then when we found the 1804 census it just seemed natural that Catherine's last name would be Melvin.
There is one more document that puts Joseph and Catherine in NY around 1800 and that's the marriage of a revolutionary war pensioner that Joseph and Kate witnessed. I do not have a copy of the record (I wish I did) but another reliable McCargar researcher does.
In one of Joseph McCargar's application for government land (in 1802) he stated that he had 3 kids. We are certain (just short of positive) that Joseph never had any children of his own and that the 3 kids mentioned were Kate's.
He also shows up in the Sept to Dec 1812 muster role of the 1st Regiment Grenville Militia as a private. (the war of 1812) There is also a Jacob Malvin in the 1813 muster roll. These muster roles seem to notorious for spelling errors so this may be Joseph and not Jacob. 2
