bullet  Facts and details for :

Her obituary was published in the Vancouver Sun and The Province on 10 Jan 2007 in Vancouver, New Westminster Land District, British Columbia, Canada. HAILEY _ Vesla (nee Benum), born November 10, 1943 passed away on the morning of January 4, 2007, after a courageous 2 year battle with cancer. She is lovingly survived by husband Al, children Eric and Marika, step-children Alfred and Marina (Cliff), sister Denise, brother Fred (Susan), and nieces Brittany, Gillian, and Morgan. Also survived by numerous relatives in Norway and Sweden. She is predeceased by her parents. Vesla was born in Oban, Scotland, where her father, Olav Benum, a captain in the Royal Norwegian Air Force, was stationed. After her father was killed near the end of WWII, Vesla and her mother Harriet, returned to Oslo, Norway. At 8 years of age they moved overseas to Canada for a year. That move turned permanent when Harriet married Arthur Fraser, who raised Vesla as his own. Vesla quickly learned English as the family lived in various cities around Western Canada. The family grew as Harriet and Art had two more children, Denise and Fred. In 1967, settled in Vancouver, Vesla married Tony Hudz. The couple later moved to Southern California, where Eric was born in 1975 and Marika in 1979. After their divorce, she moved with Marika back to Vancouver, the city she considered to be home. Not long after, Vesla went to work for UBC, where she stayed until her retirement in 2003. She was highly regarded and successful in the departments she worked in, which included a progression from the Registrars Office, to the Arts' Advising Office, and finally UBC Press. In 1996 Vesla fell in love with Al (Bunny) Hailey and they were married in 1997. They lived in Vancouver, but were often found cruising or traveling the world to such places as Alaska, the Caribbean, Central America, Hawaii, and Europe. One memorable trip they took was to Norway with her children, where they met their Norwegian relatives and learned about their heritage. Upon retirement, Vesla and Bunny moved to the Sunshine Coast with their treasured cat Charlie. A short time after, Vesla was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, which she fought with amazing strength. Fulfilling her desire to remain at home, she was able to stay there until she passed away with her husband and children by her side. Vesla will be celebrated and remembered as a vibrant and loving woman who was outgoing, honest, and kind. She lived her life with great integrity and truly cared about the people around her. Vesla made friends everywhere she went. She had a natural talent for developing and maintaining friendships with people close to home and around the world. Nothing was more important to Vesla than family and she made each of us feel special. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her. The family would like to give sincere thanks to the many individuals who helped to make the last 2 years of Vesla's life as comfortable as possible. Special thanks to Dr. Sara Wadge, the doctors, nurses and staff of St. Mary's Hospital in Sechelt and the BC Cancer Agency in Vancouver, and the home care nurses and aides without whose assistance Vesla would not have been able to remain in her home. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2007 at 2 PM, at St. Philip's Anglican Church located at 3737 W. 27th Avenue, Vancouver, BC. In lieu of flowers, Vesla and family request, that a donation be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. 1
