REV. DONALD R. KEATING
December 1925 - March 2009
Donald Keating of North Bay, ON passed away in hospital in Ottawa on March 3, 2009 as a result of injuries suffered from a fall. Predeceased by his parents, Earle and Bessie Keating, he is survived by four children, Joy (David Fai), Donna, Paul and Andrew; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister Marion McNabb and brothers Charles and Jack and many nieces and nephews. Born in Silverton, MB Donald excelled in hockey, baseball and track in Russell; served in the RCAF, 1943 to 1945, attended United College, graduating in Theology in 1951. Donald served the United Church pastoral charges in Sherridon (where he met and married Gloria Bower), Oakville, Treherne, and Winnipeg's Westminster until 1963. Donald moved to Chicago to work in Community Organizing and returned to Toronto in 1969 to continue in Community work. From this experience he wrote and published, The Power To Make It Happen - Mass-based Community Organizing, What it is and How it works. He also lectured at York University and obtained his Masters. In 1979 Don was in a severe car accident and while not able to work, continued writing and published his autobiography, Supercat . He enjoyed participating in Church activities and singing with the Harmony Gateway Barbershoppers in North Bay. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will be held later. Don lives in each of us each time we speak up for those unable to and each time we question the status quo. 6
