He registered for military service in WWI on 23 Feb 1916 in Kingston, Frontenac, Ontario, Canada. According to the enlistment record, he was 5 feet 7 1/2 inches tall and weighed 155 pounds with a fair complexion, blue eyes, light brown hair and a 33-inch chest. He was initially assigned to the 13th Brigade of the 50th Queen's Battery. On 27 May 1916 he was transferred to the Overseas Training Company stationed at the University of Toronto. On 17 September 1916 he was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma and put on leave. He died at home and was discharged on his date of death. He attained the rank of Lance Corporal.
